If an NES and a drum machine had a kid...
...it'd be called Phoenix Down. Luckily, Junk Science (MC Baje One and DJ Snafu) and their collaborator Scott Thorough have joined up to release this gem of hip-hop record.
Using 8-bit game sounds, Phoenix Down twangs that nostalgia string in every gamer's heart. As for the hip-hop side, the boys don't get too bogged down by the video games; the album is still packed with great drum breaks and quick, nerdy lyrics. Most of the songs are packed with references to classic cartridges, like "30 Lives": the chorus is the famed cheat from Contra. Junk Science has definitely become stronger lyrically from their last release Feeding Einstein, because their rhymes come off as smooth and nonchalant, not campy and silly.
But that's not the only good thing about the album.
As a promo for their album, Modern Shark Records produced a limited edition where the album comes on a USB flash drive shaped like the Final Fantasy item, all packed in a velvet bag. It's an inventive and refreshing way of delivering a digital copy, and the flash comes packed with extras: instrumentals and acapellas of all 8 tracks (in case you want to blast them while you quest around Hyrule), art, and bonus tracks. One of these bonus tracks is a particularly tasty --and groovy-- party jam. "Saturday Love" is a track from Nuclear Family, a hip-hop collective which contributes members to Junk Science. It's got a spot in the playlist for this fall's social gatherings, for sure.
